The earliest known member of the family was Nicolai GRUMBACH. On 7 June 1664 Nicolai's son, Christian, married Anna Catharina KLEIN @ Duttweiler, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. According to the Evangelisch church record of the marriage, Nicolai was "late citizen formerly of Sumiswald in the Bernese territory".
